Greetings from Margo Yeomans, Robert Smith School Guidance Counsellor. I am very pleased to be working full time at the school this year. It is rewarding to have even more opportunity to support students through one to one counselling, small group work and full class presentations.
At Robert Smith School, common themes in counselling relate to understanding and accepting our school-wide expectations for SAFETY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and KINDNESS. Robert Smith School students have shown a strong commitment to these values, as well as a genuine willingness to figure out what has happened and how to fix problems when conflicts arise so that they can take pride in being their "best self." Through counseling, many students learn how to identify and explore their feelings, both positive and negative, to express their viewpoints and needs calmly and clearly, and to listen to others mindfully and empathetically. With these skills, students are better able to view issues from others' perspectives, to forgive themselves and others, to learn from mistakes, and to make amends when possible and appropriate to do so.
Through counselling students are also supported in learning how to identify and meet their needs for FUN, POWER, FREEDOM and BELONGING in healthy, pro-social ways that support the positive learning environment of the school. Through a wide-range of interventions and activities, often experiential and play-based, students are also helped to identify their own strengths and special gifts, to develop stronger self-esteem, to take pride in who they are as individuals and members of groups, and to help others have pride and self-acceptance as well.
Robert Smith School students may access counselling by asking in person, leaving a note in my mail box, or through a referral by a parent, guardian, teacher, educational assistant or the school principal. Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like more information about guidance at Robert Smith School.
