Mindful stretching is a way to improve physical activity and mental health (awareness, resiliency, self-esteem and self-regulation) through simple movement and breathing exercises. Positive outcomes include strengthened physical and mental well-being, as well as enhanced energy and concentration. Mindful stretching is also a fun activity for students who want to practice being present in the moment. For these reasons, a team of Robert Smith School teachers will be starting up a mindful stretching club at recess. In this club, students will have an opportunity to help create a calm and harmonious atmosphere and to learn new skills and confidences. We are hoping that the simple movement exercises will help participants to develop concentration, improve motor skills and boost strength, flexibility and balance while also encouraging a sense of belonging. Students who are interested in experiential learning, healthy life style choices, mindfulness techniques and self-regulation strategies are encouraged to come see Ms. Yeomans in Room 17 to learn more about the program. Robert Smith School Guidance Counsellor, Margo Yeomans, will supervise the Mindful Stretching Extra-Curricular Program daily. Robert Smith School teachers and support staff are invited to drop in whenever they have time.
